Miranda
Age: 13
Miranda is highly intelligent, academically strong, and unapologetically herself. A passionate reader, she is especially fascinated by books about the afterlife, spirits, and communication with the dead. Her interests make her an easy target for teasing at school, where she is often labelled a “weirdo” — a title she wears with pride.
Miranda claims to be able to communicate with ghosts and to sense spiritual energy, an ability she believes runs in her family through her grandmother and mother. Whether others believe her or not, Miranda takes her gift seriously, approaching the supernatural with confidence, curiosity, and respect rather than fear.
Drawn to Mumbey’s unusual energy, Miranda quickly becomes involved in its mysteries. She forms a close friendship with Tristan, sensing both his grief and his openness to the unseen. Practical, brave, and quietly stubborn, she often acts as the group’s guide through the paranormal — the one most willing to step forward when others hesitate.
Together, Tristan, Miranda, and Jonathan navigate Mumbey much as they navigate growing up — facing fear and kindness, loss and laughter, the unsettling alongside the ordinary. For those seen as different, Mumbey can feel isolating, but it also becomes a place where difference is protected and valued. In learning how to move through the town, they learn how to move through the world.
